True Confessions of a Dumpster Diver

After being in our house for almost a full year I finally decided it was time to hang some pictures & make it look like we actually live here. Also with all of the kids in school all day long I was bored. So I thought I could use a project. Or 7.
The happy coincidence is that we made a HUGE haul from the model home up the street. As I was picking up Mackenzie one day, I notice all of this stuff from the model home sitting in the driveway. Me & another Mom wonder what's up with that. So we go ask "What's up with that?" They say, we don't know what they are doing with it, check back, we should know in the next 4 hours. Fast forward to me driving home with a van-full of girls from Activity Days. Said stuff is NOW SITTING AT THE CURB. I say "KENNEDY, RUN AND ASK WHAT THEY ARE DOING WITH THIS STUFF." She says "They say its FREE & TAKE WHAT WE WANT. So naturally I do. I start issuing orders, "Mackenzie-go get your sister, Kennedy, sit on this couch & don't let anyone take it, Annaliese-you & Madison grab the chair & carry it to the house." Katie whines that the couch is too big, so I grab a neighborhood boy & get him to help me carry it. Oh yeah. Katie was SOOOOOOOOOOO embarrassed. All I can say is her Grandpa Knivila will be so proud. Uh-huh. We crammed the van full & hauled stuff home down the sidewalk. Drew says "So we are going to look like a model home now????" I say "Heck no, we are slobs. We'll never look like a model home."
This is the most excitement I have had in a long time. Oh yeah. So the following pictures are of my efforts to spiff up the House of Smedley. This shelf I actually PAID $20 for because I thought I could strip the paint off & repaint to hold Kennedy's stuffed animals. I thought it would be FUN. I was stupid. It was fun for about 5 minutes. But it does look pretty swanky now that it's painted and in her room. Yep. Swanky.

My new couch, new pillows on the couch, new lamp & new bird picture on the wall. The birds are on their way out. I am not into poultry. In any form. But I love the frames and the matting around the birds. So birds go, frames stay.

My free new chair, other poultry picture & big orange vase thingy. All free thanks to the model home. I love you model home. You are my hero.

I got about 50 free pillows. The 4 pillows in the middle were 4 that I got free that just so happen to match our bedspread. Yeehaw.

Weird giant bamboo stick thingys plus big orange pot. My plan for the bamboo is to split it in half lengthwise & use is as the chair-rail in Katie's room. It was free, so why not?????It's Drew's job to figure out how to get it to stay on the wall. I can't be bothered with technicalities like that.

Katie's room so far. She had the blue paint that is supposed to match her chairrail that we are now changing to the bamboo. But the blue will match her bedspread. If I ever finish. Which is not looking too hopeful at this point.

These are going on the wall above our bed. Someday. When I figure out what to put with them....

free chair before I decorated with it.

Pile o' pillows before I figured out where to put them.

free lamp.

Giant metal thingy that we had to paint the wall yellow so we could hang up. FINALLY got that dumb wall painted. And nobody died in the attempt either. Now I have to paint the railing white so we can reattach to wall & paint the other 2 walls of the staircase white. So much to do, so little Honey-Do-List time.......

Kennedy got her desk cleaned off so she can actually do HOMEWORK on it. Will wonders never cease?????

They made these for the Activity Day girls at church. Kennedy has this hanging in her room. It's sooooo cute. Love it.

My collage wall from Michigan has been in boxes for about 3 years now. Since we packed them up before we put the house up for sale & I finally just decided to hang them again. Mackenzie was so upset that there were not enough pics of her for the wall. I tried to explain that she was little when we last had the wall up, but she was inconsolable. I had to change some pictures around & put new ones in frames so she was satisfied. This is "her wall". She thinks. I just love the hall of fame walls that we can walk down now......
