San Diego Zoo

So. Two days before my birthday there is a card at my spot when I go to sit down for breakfast. I say "What's this?" Drew says "an early birthday present." I open the card & it says pack your bags for a long weekend-where we are going is a surprise! Wow. Did NOT see that coming. So he surprised me with a trip to San Diego. We had a great time & the kids had a great time with Grandma & Grandpa Smedley. Here are some highlights from our trip to the zoo. Mostly just the animals that I haven't seen before. You gotta love the one of Drew here!
An Okapi- half zebra & half something that I forgot.

The apes were cool. 4 of them were out where we could see them.

An elephant doing tricks for treats.

Love the giraffes.

I've never seen a koala up close & this one the lady brought out & showed him around & he was pretty close to where we were standing. I love koala bears!

I was so excited for the panda exhibit & then they only had 1 panda out because the panda exhibit is under construction. So we got to see this panda, but the crabby lady in charge chased us along really quickly because there was a line. But this was my first time seeing a live panda.

A polar bear.

Here I am trying not to be freaked out on the tram. Being terrified of heights this was hard to do.

The view from the tram. We wanted to do the bus ride, but it was always crowded.

A shot to try to show you how high up this tram actually was.

This elephant is at the entrance of the zoo. I liked it. Maybe I can get Drew to put one in the front yard for me....

Seeing Rent

Drew got tickets for us to see Rent. It was a beautiful day so we walked around downtown for awhile after. Two years ago we went to Chicago to see them dye the river green & see Wicked for my birthday & 4 years ago we went to the Grand Travers Resort & Spa for the weekend. I think he has now made a precedent & so I can almost look forward to my birthday in 2 years! Rent was good, but Wicked was awesome!!!

Our dinner at Anthony's Fish Grotto. The fish was fresh & delish!

We ate right here on the water. We watched this cruise ship launch while we were eating. Sadly, this is as close as I will get to a cruise with Mr Motionsickness Drew, but he does good with the other vacations.
Hard to see but there are 3 cruise ships lined up here ready to go.

The Border

I was a little bummed that Drew didn't think to bring our passports. We were right on the border of Mexico & I would have loved to go over to Tijuana for a look around. But these pictures are as close as we got. I got a pic of the fence for my mom because she says 40 yrs ago when she was there, there was no fence. Hard to see, but the side of the hill with nothing on it is US, the other side covered in houses is Mexico.
The end of the American road, start of Mexico.

Bummer, the pic didn't turn out. The sign for Tijuana is bright colors, but it didn't show up in the pics.

The fence between the US & Mexico behind the outlet mall parking lot.

At the Beach in San Diego

It was too cold to swim, but we had to go check out the beach while we were in San Diego.

Real surfers! Wow. We don't surf in Michigan or Utah, so this was exciting to me.

The boardwalk with little rental houses on them. Never seen this before. I thought it was interesting to see people park their cars & live in these houses. Cool, but strange.

Hyrum's 1st Birthday Party

We went up to Mindy's house for Hyrum's birthday party. Hard to believe is already one year old! He is so darn cute!

His birthday cupcake. Gee Mindy-way to go! No lame cake from the grocery store for Hyrum (sorry girls, we only have lame grocery store cake at our house)

Eating his new toy before Hannah & Mackenzie took off with it.

I made this for his birthday. I am going to put all of it on my scrapbook blog soon.

Happy St Patty's Day!

This is one holiday that I can keep track of since it's right after my birthday! And we go all out with the green. Who cares if we aren't Irish? I made cheese sauce and colored it green. You can't see how green it actually was in this pic. It looked like liquid play-doh it was so green!
